Cyclone Rep Environmental Policy
A key goal for Cyclone is to embed environmental sustainability at the heart of our practice and organizational culture. We are committed to the principles of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle, proactively working to minimize our environmental impact and promote more sustainable ways of working to our staff, partners and stakeholders.
Following are sustainable practices we embrace:
Avoid pollution of air, land and water wherever possible, encouraging sustainable travel for artists, staff and audiences.
Continue to develop sustainable ways to publicise our shows and communicate with our audience, maximising our use of digital platforms. Printing of scripts and flyers will be kept to a minimum, and recycled paper used where possible. Double-sided printing will be used where possible to minimise paper usage. Print cartridges should be recycled. Use digital communications and scripts as much as possible. We will use paperless tickets for our school audiences.
Use rehearsal venues that are accessible by public transport. If company members must travel by car, maximize occupancy and encourage car share. Run rehearsals using daylight or under working lights where possible.
Encourage company members to bring their own food and drinks – in reusable containers and with reusable cutlery – for breaks and in between performances. -We will encourage all actors, volunteer support team members and guest artists to use reusable water bottles, and to dispose of recyclable waste in the appropriate recycling bins where these are available.
With a grant from The Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media we had bespoke floor wraps made that will work for multiple shows.
We use/repurpose what is already in stock. A costume inventory has been developed so that we can repurpose clothing from past shows for new productions.
If new clothing, props or set pieces are needed will try to source materials and equipment locally. Additionally, we aim to buy from charity shops and/ or from flea markets and shops which recycle unbought clothes rather than putting them in landfills.
Avoid using non-biodegradable material, if possible, e.g. glitter, snow, and balloons.
Encourage production use of and experimentation with sustainable or recycled materials.
We will encourage our creative team and crew members to be environmentally proactive, including sourcing materials locally and avoiding single-use items.
Switch off all equipment when not in use and Leave show lighting off until it is really needed.
After a production is over, we reflect on how successful we were at sustainability and to see if there are lessons learnt and what could be done more sustainably in the future.
We will arrange meetings to be most environmentally efficient in terms of travel, making use of video-conferencing facilities where possible.
Cyclone Rep feels that the responsibility towards the environment is not limited to the practices within the company but it should also be reflected in the productions themselves. Therefore an element of exposition and discussion of the current situation of the environment is introduced, when possible, into some of our productions’ storylines and theme analysis. Furthermore, when possible, the theme of Climate Change is used as the key theme in a new play or interpretation of an older play. See for example Plastic Planet.
Our Environmental Policy will be regularly reviewed and updated to ensure we monitor and minimise the environmental impact of our operations and the work we produce for touring.
