Cyclone Rep announces its newest Shakespeare Session, Othello: The Green-Eyed Monster: an adaptation of The Tragedy of Othello, The Moor of Venice by Cyclone Artistic Director Peadar Donohoe, directed by Donal Gallagher and featuring Marcus Bale in a pulse-pounding one-man show that places the theme of jealousy at its heart. Through performance, discussion, and audience interaction, Marcus Bale will unpack the plot, key themes, and characters of Othello, The Moor of Venice, while bringing Shakespeare’s classic tragedy vividly to life.
As suggested by the image of Othello on this page, the two-faced nature of many characters dominates the tragedy. This is most clearly seen in the figure of “honest” Iago, who manipulates Othello’s perception through deception and falsehood, exploiting the Moor’s insecurities for his own gain. It is also reflected in Othello himself, whose transformation from a noble and respected leader into a jealous murderer reveals the destructive power of manipulation and suspicion.
The theme of duality further drives the tragedy through a series of constant contradictions as Marcus explores appearance versus reality, love versus violence, and the internal struggle between order and chaos, using these opposing forces to uncover the complexities of key characters and the tragedy of their downfall.
